This small quayside garden was surrounded by neighbouring walls from all angles and felt closed in. The client’s brief was to provide some interest to the walls with attractive planting, areas for entertaining and relaxing, and a lawned area for sunbathing and picnics. Cube designed a garden with symmetrical elements to balance and enhance the space available for planting and entertaining. Slatted fence panels and coloured walls were used as alternating features to break up the feeling of enclosure. An Osmanthus Tree created a focal point at the centre of the back fence, underplanted with buxus balls, agapanthus, astrantia, verbenas and anemonies. A bespoke water-feature was formed as part of this feature raised bed, creating an ambient sound to wash away any distractions from the relaxing space. Grey porcelain paving was chosen for a clean contemporary look. Oversized planters softened the neighbouring wall and created a backdrop for the dining and entertaining area. On the opposite side, made-to measure cedar slatted seating was crafted to create a relaxing lounge area. Raised planters added colour to this seating area and softened the neighbouring glass wall. An artificial lawn was chosen for low maintenance and continues the theme of straight contemporary lines. Soft lighting was evenly placed around the garden to enhance the focal points and extend the hours of entertaining.

‘Sean Butler is an exceptional landscaper. He draws together the very best teams delivering a really high quality of finish coupled with a designers eye for detail. He is without doubt one of the most exacting contractors we have worked with, proactive and responsive. Sean gets the job done to the very best standards. We would have no hesitation recommending Sean for any work. He’s a complete super star and a pleasure to work with.’
‘My experience with Cube has been very much about what I wanted and liked; and how that could be translated into something which ticked all my personal boxes, whilst being realistic in terms of cost and maintenance required.
It was good to know that once work started, it would be a continuous effort until completion. I am amazed at how quickly transformation occurred. Right from day 1 of work commencing, the team on site were polite, friendly and tolerant. I’m sure their hearts sank when they knew I was determined to keep getting in the way. Not only were they meticulous with each stage of the transformation, they were knowledgeable, left the garden tidy each evening, and were very considerate. I loved the shopping for plants experience with someone with insider knowledge as to what would and wouldn’t work!
I’m so happy with my beautiful new garden. I can usually be found just sitting outside, day or night, freezing cold but with a huge smile on my face. I have rediscovered my love of gardening, so a big thank you!
I would, and do, recommend Cube without any hesitation whatsoever.’
‘Our garden required a complete redesign and reconstruction. A major project. Having sought quotations from several local companies we found Cube 1994.
For a reasonable design fee Sean Butler came up with an innovative, practical and low maintenance design back garden which fulfilled everything we were looking for.
Sean has keen design eye, a good knowledge of plants a good listening ear and this coupled with a background in civil engineering together with the team he employs makes Cube 1994 the complete package.
The craftsmen he employs, and craftsmen they certainly are, are punctual, tidy, personable, considerate and fulfil the test of good honest endeavour.
The transformation and quality of work can only be described as outstanding !
We are absolutely delighted with the results and have now re engaged Sean to design and landscape the front garden!’
