After more than 20 years of trying, our clients successfully acquired this additional garden area, which had become overgrown with bramble and was largely unused by neighbouring properties.
The brief was to create a fully wheelchair accessible garden with a modern aesthetic, while remaining sympathetic to the character of the listed property.
Access to the garden was limited, with no off-street parking and entry only through the period property. Neighbouring owners kindly granted temporary access over the boundary fence for materials and provided parking on their driveway.
A key challenge was the existing low crinkle crankle brick wall, which, despite being overlooked by neighbouring properties, was listed and therefore could not be altered or have fixings attached. In response, the design followed the wall’s natural curves with a bespoke statement fence, enhancing rather than concealing this distinctive feature.
A bespoke barbecue kitchen island was introduced, featuring a slatted batten façade and porcelain work surface, with integrated barbecue, fridge, and under-counter storage.
A luxury pergola with integrated LED lighting and blinds defines the lounge area, providing both privacy and shelter.
The planting palette was intentionally restrained, using whites, greens, violets, and lavenders. A carefully selected mix of evergreen structure and summer flowering perennials ensures year round interest, with hydrangeas, agapanthus, and salvias creating a balanced, classic meets contemporary finish.
