From our first small landscape gardening project on a £30 a day rate in 1994 to RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal Award-Winning Show Gardens, the sky continues to be the limit for the Cube Team as we celebrate 30 years of Garden Design and Build.
Influenced by the late John Brookes MBE, our director Sean Butler taught himself to draw using line-weight and shadow techniques. Sean’s natural ability for design was recognised by the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) where he gained membership status in 2006 and was appointed Vice-Chairman from 2011-2014. Sean’s experience is valued industry-wide with regular requests for press articles, expert panels and competition judging.
As the company has grown, Sean has mentored many apprentice garden designers and our designs have transitioned from hand-drawn to realistic and immersive 3D renders. Lead designer, Marta has been with the company for over 3 years now, working alongside Sean to elevate the quality of our designs and stay ahead of the curve. Our design team prides itself on its creativity and finding solutions to construction problems that haven’t been considered.
Our turnkey service has allowed us to collaborate on 7 RHS Show Gardens between 2012 and 2022, most notably winning Gold on one of our first projects with Ruth Willmott ‘The 9 Billion Conversation Garden’ in 2013 and then The People’s Choice Award for ‘The Breakthrough Breast Cancer Garden’ in 2015.
Cube’s high standards in design and landscaping have won multiple industry awards over the years and we continue to be accredited by the SGD and British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI). In BALI’s most recent quality assessment (March 2024), we were commended for our high standards in construction and our commitment to our employees “Cube is a very well-run family business noteworthy for the strong people-centred ethos at its core and this has been demonstrated by being accredited ‘Gold’ standard by Investors in People”, David Mulholland BALI.
Behind the scenes, Jane and Anastasia have worked alongside Sean to lead the business in the right direction through effective strategic planning. Sean’s wife, Jane has gradually taken on a permanent role at Cube and now assists with the day-to-day running of the business. Anastasia celebrated her 10 years of service with Cube in March and has watched the business grow from strength to strength.
Cube’s plans for the future are centred around staff training and development, this includes Sean’s sons Myles and Izaak who both hold senior management positions. Working alongside Sean from a young age, they have honed their skills and now manage all day-to-day Project Operations, on-the-job training and support to the Landscaping teams.
Myles and Izaak understand the importance of sustainability in modern business, they are keen to reduce our carbon footprint and raise awareness of eco-friendly practices in our staff training programmes. We are currently expanding our portfolio to include more eco-friendly concrete-free solutions and we support the Society of Garden Designers ‘Say No to Plastic Grass and Plants’ Campaign.
The next generation of Cube brings in fresh ideas and innovation, essential to the development of the Company.
To celebrate our 30th Anniversary, the Cube Team are making plans to give back to 30 causes over the next year. Our 30 FOR 30 Plan will include even more endurance sports from Sean, exciting team fundraising events and donations to the local community. Sean kicked off the events last week fundraising for Children with Cancer UK with 5 sprint triathlons in 5 days across 5 different countries. Look out for more events on our social media pages and get in touch if you would like to be involved with our community projects.
